Eugene O Neill s Anna Christie is unusually dark material for a 1950s Broadway musical comedy and that problem was never really overcome in this show which turned out to be a star vehicle designed for Gwen Verdon after she became a marquee name with her performance in Damn Yankees. The score was by Bob Merrill and as this cast album shows it is unremarkable. Although the show ran for a year and turned a profit on star power it has never had a major revival and is now nearly forgotten.
