CD. The Morning Glories three albums each exhibit a different set of influences; the self-titled debut was a tightly wound set of stark pop songs akin to early Wire while the third Let the Body Hang showed a newfound alt-country tinge. 1995 s Fully Loaded however is a raucous guitar-heavy take on electric white-boy blues somewhere between the early Yardbirds and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion neither as traditional as the former nor as arch as the latter. Singer/songwriter Christian Gibbs keeps the lyrics and chord changes dead simple but refreshingly novel; these aren t just tired reworkings of Little Red Rooster. Song titles like In My Room Cold Tire Iron Serenade and Sweet Side of Jesus tell most of the story but the barreling production (by the band and engineer Bryce Goggin) heavy on the grinding in-your-face guitar is equally important. Fully Loaded is for anyone who wishes the Jesus Lizard could control the noise freakouts a little better and that Jon Spencer would wipe that smirk off of his face. ~ Stewart Mason Rovi
