0724381088920. New condition. CD. Inspired by all things Brazilian -- from a churning samba beat and the atmospheric jazz of Airto Moreira to the more pressing style of (Argentine) Lalo Schifrin soundtracks -- the Italian duo Soulstance brings a bit more to the table than most crews of ethno-lounge revivalists. For one thing much of Truth Simplicity & Love is played (by just the two brothers) rather than programmed and played quite well at that. The opener Blue Grassland is the highlight here working a deep groove on electric bass while crickets chirp in the background and plaintive flutes and Rhodes keyboards sweep in on a gentle melodic storm. Unfortunately on several tracks Soulstance appears happy to simply ape Brazilian forms resulting in a bland pleasant melange of Muzak and Brazilian pop. Enzo s guitar solo on Riding the Mambo is a dead ringer for George Benson but aside from being capable of playing like Benson it s not much to hear. As solid as any in the Rio-by-way-of-Rome crowd (Balanco Nicola Conte) but still lacking a bit of forward momentum. ~ John Bush Rovi
