As the title suggests Mega Movie Mix takes songs from Disney s recent films as performed by the entertainment giant s stable of teen pop performers and a few other kid-friendly artists. These songs have been repackaged before although they probably haven t appeared in a collection quite like this. Most of the album -- which comes from the soundtracks to The Lizzie McGuire Movie Lilo & Stitch Holes Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen Freaky Friday The Princess Diaries and The Lion King 1 1/2 -- achieves a cookie-cutter like standard of slick canned production although a few tracks manage to have their own identities. Simple Plan one of the only non-Disney generated acts on the collection turn a cover of Happy Together ; while the band might be quintessential safe mall-punk they might as well be the Stooges compared to most of the other artists on the album. Similarly Atomic Kitten take breathy shiny dance-pop to a higher level than most of Disney s homegrown artists with their version of The Tide Is High. Shaggy s Keepin It Real is another standout track. As far as the studio s talent goes the D Tent Boys Dig It which was a highlight of the Holes soundtrack remains a highlight here along with the tracks by Disney divas Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan. Lohan gets two tracks: the bouncy pop of Drama Queen (That Girl) which was better than the movie it supported and the more rockin Ultimate which reflects her character in Freaky Friday. Duff meanwhile opens the collection with Why Not (McMix) reaffirming that while she might not be the best singer in Disney s stable she has the most personality. For any kids or preteens who don t already own the soundtracks from which Mega Movie Mix was compiled the album could be a convenient addition to their teen pop collections even if its music is a little too consistent for its own good. ~ Heather Phares Rovi
