As Rosemary Clooney s initial solo recordings for Columbia Records began to fall into the public domain in Europe in the early years of the 21st century (due to a 50-year copyright limit there) a flood of unlicensed CD compilations appeared; this is another one. Britain s Proper Records presents 25 tracks recorded 1950-1952 in chronological order. (This is not all Clooney recorded during the period. It leaves out children s and Christmas songs for instance.) That means things start with her duet with label mate Frank Sinatra on the novelty Peachtree Street and continue with Clooney s early run of chart hits: You re Just in Love (a duet with Guy Mitchell); Beautiful Brown Eyes ; Come On-a My House ; Mixed Emotions ; I m Waiting Just for You ; If Teardrops Were Pennies ; I Wish I Wuz ; Be My Life s Companion ; Tenderly ; Half as Much ; Botch-A-Me (Ba-Ba-Baciami Piccina) ; Too Old to Cut the Mustard (with Marlene Dietrich); Blues in the Night ; and You ll Never Know (with Harry James trumpet). Many of these are light-hearted novelties of course but there are also suggestions of Clooney s later expertise with standards particularly in the rest of her Harry James session on songs like Over the Rainbow It Might as Well Be Spring and When You Wish Upon a Star.
